Amadou Onana is aiming to be fit for Aston Villa’s Europa League final against Freiburg on May 20.
Onana picked up a calf injury in the first leg of the semifinal against Nottingham Forest and was sidelined for Villa’s 2-2 draw with Burnley on Sunday.
Sources close to the player, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Athletic last week that the 24-year-old hopes to return to full fitness in the days leading up to the final in Istanbul.
In Onana’s absence, Victor Lindelof has stepped up impressively alongside Youri Tielemans in midfield. However, Onana remains a key figure for manager Unai Emery, who admitted after the draw at Turf Moor that the player could still feature again this season.
“Hopefully, but I don’t know,” Emery said in his post-match press conference. “He is still injured. Initially, the doctor told us it would be around three weeks. We will continue working with Lindelof in that role, and also with Bogarde. We don’t have Boubacar Kamara, who is very important for us, but I am positive about the players we have. If someone is unavailable, we will find solutions, as we always have.”
Onana has made 36 appearances across all competitions this season. Villa currently sit fifth in the Premier League, four points clear of Bournemouth in the race for a Champions League spot.
